- <p>RECUPERATING. EMPRESS MICHIKO, 59, wife of the Emperor of Japan;
- from an undisclosed illness, thought to be "symptoms of a psychogenic
- nature;" at Akasaka Palace, in Tokyo. The Empress collapsed
- shortly before a ceremony celebrating her 59th birthday. Though
- she has regained consciousness, she is suffering from a temporary
- loss of speech. Fatigued over the past few months by an arduous
- schedule, the Empress is also believed to have been under emotional
- strain caused by bad press. With unprecedented harshness toward
- a member of the Imperial Family, Japanese newspapers have portrayed
- her as a shrew who dominates a passive Emperor Akihito and a
- resentful household staff.
